Winter Vegetables

Another runt-filled season in my veggie garden. I keep waiting for things to get bigger, but they just refuse.

One of these days I am going to get some more media, toss this old media that I don't think is draining well, and plant some new seeds. Maybe this weekend!

Here's my runt lettuce.

Runt kale.

Runt radishes.

Runt corn that preferred my compost pile.

It's the end of the season, so I guess I should just have a runt harvest and be done with it.

Is it runty because it's in pots? Maybe it needs more space to grow?

Hi EG,

Vegetables can actually thrive in containers, believe it or not. In some ways, it should be easier to grow them in that way than in the ground (no nematodes, fewer weed problems, complete control over the media, etc.)

I think I did several things wrong:

1) I don't think they got enough light.

2) I probably didn't feed them enough (with fertilizer).

3) Most importantly, I don't think the media was draining enough. So the soil was staying too wet. (Next time I will drill more holes in the containers.)

Live and learn.
