Man Up (Summer Survival)

So I decided I'm going to try to get through this summer without turning on my A/C window unit. I lived without A/C of any kind for all three years of college (at UF), and I liked it. I've gotten soft in my old age and it's time to toughen up. (Plus I don't want to shell out the cash -- A/C is costly and right now my electricity bill is below $50 a month.)

Today I went to the store and bought two fans, which are going to save me.

One's for my bedroom, and one's for the living room/kitchen. I have ceiling fans in each room, but sometimes they're not enough. Lately I've been having trouble sleeping because of the heat. Enter fan. Added bonus: white noise covers sounds of neighbors partying late at night. It's a win-win. I love summer.

I gave up my AC unit last year (I'm from Florida originally, grown up in the air conditioned climate and live in NYC now) just to see if I could do it. Good on you for trying! I don't know if I could do it in Florida, but I think if I ever lived there again, I'd be willing to try!

Man up, my ass. When your walls and refrigerator drip with water, mold grows on your leather shoes and you stick your head in the freezer just to cool down, you'll throw in the towel. Which will be soaked, by the way.

I'm going to have to side with Lara on this one - I grew up in Palatka without AC and my parents STILL don't have it. Humidity ruined all of my leather shoes and belts, an antique doll and most tragically my high school letter jacket! (Okay, maybe the antique doll was more tragic, but I loved that letter jacket). The lack of AC is also why my parents must routinely replace electronics like TVs, phones and my dad's hearing aids.
